Competencies: Linking Assessment to Performance and Development
Competencies have been defined in a variety of different ways by the scientific community as well as the Human Resources field. Generally speaking, most definitions of competencies required by people to succeed in the workplace include something about the capability to become good at a particular activity by utilizing one's knowledge, skills, past experience and natural talent. The competency of Delegation could therefore be defined as the ability to delegate assignments, projects or tasks to ensure that each person is working on the highest priority activity and the one that they are most likely to be able to successfully complete. It stands to reason then that different jobs require different competencies. Competencies are significant because they can be used as yardsticks to improve performance (both individual and organizational) in at least three ways: Selection, Feedback and Development.
1. Selection - To the extent that new employees can be hired into the job already possessing most, if not all, of the competencies required for successful performance, the probability of their learning the job quickly and executing at a high level is much greater. Competencies can thus be used to guide recruitment (wherein the company seeks to identify recruiting sources rich in desired competencies) and selection (where the company builds structured interviews around the critical competencies it requires).
2. Feedback - Research has shown that employees receiving feedback about their strengths and weaknesses improve their performance more than those who don't receive feedback. Furthermore, it appears that those who need it most are the ones who also benefit the most from feedback. Competencies provide a useful framework for organizing job-relevant feedback to improve performance.
3. Development - Finally, competencies can be an effective way to organize and guide developmental activities. Although enhancing one's knowledge or changing one's skill level is not easy, those who make development a priority can improve their resulting performance. By involving oneself in developmental processes designed to enhance or increase a particular competency, overall job performance can more easily be improved.
The Concept of Critical Competencies
Critical job competencies are the knowledge and skills required to perform a particular job especially well. The critical competency concept is reflected in the fact that employees who excel at particular jobs exhibit similar competencies.
When seeking to fill a position, or alternatively when informing your RPO provider, the objective typically includes:
• Recruiting and selecting individuals who possess relevant job competencies
• Helping individuals improve their performance by further developing relevant job competencies
Meeting these objectives requires a thorough understanding of exactly which competencies are required by the job and how any one person measures up against these competencies.
A comprehensive competency analysis will guide organizations in choosing the critical competencies around which a structured interview, performance appraisal, or multi-rater assessment should be created. How To Get A Job By Having A Flawless Interview
Are you one of the few lucky ones to get a call for interview from your dream company? Are you totally prepared to sit in front of the board of directors and promote yourself? If not, then follow these simple steps that I intend to suggest you. First and foremost, be there in time.
This is the most important thing to do while going for an interview. There is a thin difference between being there on time and being there in time. Someone being in time for an interview means being there before time whereas being on time means being there exactly at the time asked for. It is always a better idea to be there in time. If you are late, just think about the impression that you are giving to your hiring manager.
You being late on the interview day means two things…either you are not bothered about the job or you are not responsible enough to join the company! In order to avoid these accusations be early. Moreover longer the face time is the more are the chances for you being able to express yourself to the fullest. The next important thing to do is to know the company well.
Surf the net and find out about the company, about its recent developments, about its CEO and other details. Do not be dumb stricken when asked about the company you have applied to work for. Remember it is your moral obligation to know about the place of work and be quick and prompt with the details. It is not enough to know about the company, make the interviewer know that you know about it and you are not that easy to deal with.
Then comes the rule of listen and don’t interrupt. I might seem self contradictory but it is always a better to let the interviewer speak first. Lend him an ear; let him finish what he wants to speak. Take sometime, think, frame your answer and then speak. Do not hurry because in most cases, people who hurry speak crap! Surf the net and find out about the company, about its recent developments, about its CEO and other details. Do not be dumb stricken when asked about the company you have applied to work for. Remember it is your moral obligation to know about the place of work and be quick and prompt with the details. It is not enough to know about the company, make the interviewer know that you know about it and you are not that easy to deal with.
Then comes the rule of listen and don’t interrupt. I might seem self contradictory but it is always a better to let the interviewer speak first. Lend him an ear; let him finish what he wants to speak. Take sometime, think, frame your answer and then speak. Do not hurry because in most cases, people who hurry speak crap! But in the process if you feel that the conversation is coming to a standstill then it is your responsibility to keep it going. In that case show off your research.
Carry copies of your resume. The person interviewing you is a busy person and might not carry your resume to the interview board. So carry one. Anyways, it is better for you if he goes through the resume for a second time and gets the facts about you in his head. Hold up a good personality as it counts a lot, and last but not the least follow up. If the interviewer gives his card then make use of it. Thank him for taking the time out for you and subtly ask for the job.
